This blog post is going to be centred around the iconic Vietnamese Summer Rolls! These are not to be confused with the Chinese spring rolls, which are deep fried and cooked thoroughly. The Summer Rolls are perfect for people who love tasting freshness in their food, and is a much healthier option! This pack also comes with a special dipping sauce, which someone has asked me to sell separately because they loved it so much- maybe we will one day!
Vietnamese Summer Rolls are generally called gỏi cuốn in Vietnamese, but they also go under different names around Vietnam. They are gỏi cuốn or salad rolls in Southern Vietnam, nem cuốn or nem rolls in Northern Vietnam, and rice paper rolls in Central Vietnam. Whenever I make them I am reminded about my visits to the country, and how they represent the value Vietnamese people put in freshness as well as the heat that makes it seem like a perpetual summer. But whether it is hot or cold, we can always do with a little roll of sunshine! 🙂
Summer rolls is one of the most popular dishes in Vietnamese cuisine, and it was voted #30 out of 50 most delicious foods in the world by CNN Travel- that’s a glowing testament in my book! The rice paper in the Meal Kits are made just like in Vietnam, with the pure ingredients of tapioca flour, rice and salt. To ensure it is super authentic, I even sourced the Fish Sauce in the dipping sauce from Vietnam, because the best fish sauce is made there. It wouldn’t taste Vietnamese without it! You can also substitute poached chicken or pork if you don’t eat shrimp, or they’re not available.
A great feature of the Vietnamese Summer Rolls is that they can be made ahead, and don’t need to be warm. The kit makes 20 rolls, so you can bring them out on picnics, use them as finger food at a party, brought along on a potluck plate (they’ll look super impressive!), or put them in your children’s lunchboxes. The list is endless!
